Singers (Overview) & Country Vocalists

Singers/Vocalists.

Over the years, singing has been the most performed talent at Miss America and has always been the lion's share of the Top 10.

In every decade of the television years (1954-2014), there have been more singers in Top 10  than any other talent type, but there have been up and down cycles.

In the 50s drama/monologues came a very close second (21 singers and 20 drama/monologues over six years, 1954-1959).
In the 60s singers took exactly 50% of the Top 10 spots (50 out of 100).
In the 70s singers still took almost half the spots (47) and instrumentalists peaked with 32 spots.
In the 80s more singers than ever before made Top 10 (58).
In the 90s singers reached their peak with almost 70% of the Top 10 spots (68 out of 100) during the decade.
In the 00s singers dropped back to their 50% mark with 46 spots out of 90 in the Top 10.
In the 10s singers are trending at 50% with 24 out of the 50 in the first five years of the decade.

I have separated singers into several sub-categories for future blog posts and video highlights:
  • Opera, classical, and semi-classical;
  • Standards & pop songs;
  • Broadway;
  • The Barbra Streisand Songbook (songs recorded by Ms. Streisand)
and
  • Singers who added a second talent to their performance (piano, dance, instruments, etc.)
The first category we'll tackle is a small but powerful one:  Country Singers, especially if you sing something that was recorded by Patsy Cline.

84-Kathy Manning (Mississippi)-2nd Runner-up-Crazy
86-Stephany Samone (Texas)-Top 10 & Prelim Talent-Stand By Your Man
90-Suzanne Lawrence (Texas)-3rd Runner-up & Prelim Talent-Sweet Dreams
94-Andrea Krahn (Georgia)-3rd Runner-up-I Fall To Pieces
97-Mette Boving (Louisiana)-Top 10-How Do I Live

Before you email me about someone you think I should have included here, perhaps wait until you see in what categories I put everyone else.  She might be listed in Standards/Pop or if she played piano too, she'll be in the Combo list.

Did I miss anyone?  Updates, corrections, and additional information may always be posted on Facebook on the Crowned page or by sending me an email at crownedmissa@gmail.com.
