Here we go with a big one. Some MAJOR bragging rights.
Over the next six days, I will be counting down all 54 state and territory organizations in reverse order based on the number of times each has made the Top 10 at Miss America.
Top 10 Finalists 1964 Miss America competition Vonda Kay Van Dyke, Miss Arizona 1964/Miss America 1965 is second from the right |
The parameters are:
The total number has been counted from 1954 through the competition that took place in September, 2013.
(60 competitions).
Why only start at 1954 and not go back further?
One word: TELEVISION.
Miss America was first televised in 1954, and I agree with Frank DeFord's assessment in his book THERE SHE IS, THE LIFE AND TIMES OF MISS AMERICA about how television changed the program.

Here's how to read the list:
STATE NAME - 10(5)-W,1,2,3,4
In this example, the state has made Top 10 a total of ten times with five of those women placing in the Top 5. This state has a Miss America (W), a 1st Runner-up (1), a 2nd Runner-up (2), a 3rd runner-up (3), and a 4th Runner-up (4).
The first number indicates the number of times a state has made the Top 10.
The number in parentheses indicates the number of times that state has placed in the Top 5.
W = Miss America winner
1 = 1st Runner-up
2 = 2nd Runner-up
3 = 3rd Runner-up
4 = 4th Runner-up
NFT=Non-Finalist Talent award
Why am I not including Top 15/16 Semi-Finalists awards from the last several years? Because the Miss America competition announced a Top 10 from 1952-2000 (49 years in a row). Non-Finalist Talent awards were also given but it was only a Top 10 for almost half a century. Since 2001, a Top 10 has been announced even if a larger group was first announced as a Semi-Finalist group on television. For consistently, I have only counted Top 10 placements. I will review and honor the larger group in another post.
How are ties broken when two or more states have the same number of Top 10 Finalists?
1) Ties are broken first with the number of Top 5 Finalists,
2) If they have the same number of Top 5 Finalists, then an analysis is done of the composition of those Top 5 awards - states with higher placements win the tie.
I have selected photos to represent each state, mostly choosing the highest placing state rep without using photos of any Miss America winners. I specifically want to bring additional attention to other women who have done well.
